They invite the adventurer to dance with them, and when they have danced themselves into utter exhaustion, the Baobhan Sith turn on them and feed on their blood. Mind you, they don't have fangs, they use their long sharp nails... Their hoofs are a sure giveaway, but young adventurers' eyes tend to be drawn elsewhere. One story of the Baobhan Sith tells of four young hunters, out travelling in the woods after dark, who met a group of beautiful young women who expressed a desire to dance with them. As they danced, one young man, sensing something awry, ran and hid amongst the horses. From where he had left his friends he heard terrible screams. One of the beautiful women followed him to the horses and cajoled him to come back and dance with her, but he would not leave the safety of the horses. Their iron-shod hooves saved him because like all faeries the Baobhan Sith cannot stand iron. In the morning, when the beautiful woman disappeared, the man went looking for his companions. He could take the form of a handsome man or horse, the better to tempt potential victims into the loch, where he would eat everything except the liver. In one folk tale about the Each Uisge, he tried to seduce a beautiful girl by the lake shore. He asked her to comb out his wet, tangled hair, so she (being a little smitten!) agreed. He fell asleep with his head in her lap and as she combed his hair she noticed water weeds growing all through it. Quickly and quietly, she untied her apron strings, slowly wriggled out leaving his head on her apron, and ran for her life! Is the lady is a rather inept Drowner, trying to tempt her human prey into the lake with a slimy fish, or a more seelie water nymph who just wants to give you a fishy present? Her seaweed hair would suggest she is a Kelpie in human form. They're not especially dangerous, except perhaps to your heart! Has this one been blown off course, to end up so high above the mountains? Or was she left behind because of her injury? She's reaching for her sisters even as they are flying away... https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56d75602d51cd4a272d3a4dc/1566008159970-N0RVEICC28ZCG0ZYECLU/Gancanagh.jpg Folklore - The Adventurer's Guide - Gancanagh The Gancanagh, or Love-Talker, is a smooth-talking, handsome wight often found in lonely valleys. While some accounts have him as a rather amorous trickster, prone to gossiping about his conquests, more commonly he is portrayed as a much less seelie creature. The Gancanagh seduces his victims, to their delight, until he tires of them and disappears - literally. Lovestruck women (and men perhaps?) pine for him, growing weaker and weaker as they search for something they will never find again, refusing sustenance until eventually they fade away and die of their loss and lovesickness. Yeats wrote of the Gancanagh that "he personated love and idleness, and always appeared with a dudeen in his jaw in lonesome valleys, and it was his custom to make love to shepherdesses and milkmaids." At first glance the Gancanagh appears as a well-dressed young man, and there are no tell-tale signs of his eldritch origins (unlike the Baobhan Sith, whose hooves conveniently give her away). However, he is commonly found carrying a pipe, and some legends claim he casts no shadow. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56d75602d51cd4a272d3a4dc/1566008200175-JQHEXYB0O2AOFP9R6I92/Mermaid+and+Merrow.jpg Folklore - The Adventurer's Guide - Mermaid and Merrow Mermaids in Celtic legend were widely considered very dangerous creatures, often because their presence was said to foretell a terrible storm. It is debatable whether they brought the storm or just warned of it. Additionally, I don't think they were adverse to dragging the occasional sailor under the water... Merrows, the Irish mermaids, on the other hand looked much more kindly on people and were not adverse to a bit of dalliance with a handsome fisherman if one should come their way. Merrows could be known by their red feathered cap, or cohullen druith. Like a selkie with her sealskin, a Merrow could not return to the sea without her cap, and could be stolen for a bride if a man stole her cap. Also like the selkies, folklore suggests it was usually the Merrow's children who found her cap and returned it to her. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56d75602d51cd4a272d3a4dc/1566008258634-UKLZD4WHQPMLV33VHXNB/Puca.jpg Folklore - The Adventurer's Guide - Puca The Puca (or Pwca in Wales) can sometimes be a mischievous creature out for a laugh at the expense of a hapless lost traveller, sometimes a benevolent and seelie creature known for helping farmers, but often downright dangerous and unseelie. The Puca is thought to be the same creature as the Hinkypunk or Will-O-The-Wisp, liking nothing more than to lead lost travellers astray into the dark then suddenly vanish with a wicked laugh, leaving the poor adventurer in total darkness without a clue of how to get home. On the bright side, they don't have a reputation for eating their victims, unlike many of the other dangerous creatures in this series! Puca are shapeshifters, who often take the form of a rabbit, a dog or a goat.
